Job Title: Elementary Custodian

Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Maintenance, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment with school facilities. This position supports the daily operations of the school by ensuring classrooms, common areas, and grounds are properly cleaned, maintained, and prepared for students, staff, and visitors.

Reports To: Building Administrator, Director of Maintenance, or Assistant Superintendent of Business & Operations

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (may include evening or weekend hours as assigned); 8 hours/day; subject to emergency call as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Clean and maintain classrooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Sweep, mop vacuum, and wax floors; clean carpets and maintain floor surfaces.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste in accordance with district procedures.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, and high-touch surfaces regularly.
  • Maintain building security by ensuring doors and windows are properly secured.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, replacing filters, and basic repairs as needed.
  • Set up and arrange furniture, equipment, and materials for school activities and events.
  • Assist with setup and cleanup for school community events.
  • Monitor building conditions and report maintenance or safety concerns to supervisors.
  • Operate and maintain custodial equipment and cleaning supplies in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Assist with seasonal duties such as snow and ice removal and grounds upkeep.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify supervisor when restocking is needed.
  • Support a safe, respectful, and clean environment for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintain open and professional communication with administrators, staff, and students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the school Principal.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of:
    • Basic cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
    • Safe handling and use of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
    • Basic building maintenance practices.
    • Workplace safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Skills in:
    • Time management and organization.
    • Use of custodial tools and equipment (e.g. vacuum, floor scrubber, buffers).
    • Basic problem-solving.
    • Effective communication with staff and supervisors.
  • Ability to:
    • Interpret and follow oral, written, and diagrammatic instructions.
    • Work independently and collaboratively with school staff and students.
    • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
    • Travel between school sites and district facilities as needed.
    • Perform physical demanding tasks including lifting, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
    • Maintain a positive and professional attitude.
    • Work collaboratively with school staff and respond to building needs.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments across school facilities.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching required.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and varying temperatures.
  • May require evening, weekend, or shift work.
  • Exposure to typical school-related illnesses and minor hazards.
  • Requires regular attendance and punctuality.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Previous custodial or cleaning experience preferred.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment and follow safety procedures.
  • Demonstrated reliability and strong work ethic.
  • Successful completion of required background check and employment screenings.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt
