Job Title Sushi Chef Department Asian General Function Responsible for preparing and filling customer orders and handling food in a safe manner. Core Competencies Partnerships Growth mindset Results oriented Customer focused Professionalism Primary Duties and Responsibilities Prepare fresh sushi for customers, both packaged and made‑to‑order. Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service, addressing customers by name whenever possible. Answer the telephone promptly and take product orders. Assist customers with locating products, loading/unloading heavy items, and conveying suggestions or requests. Work with co‑workers as a team and provide training to ensure customer satisfaction. Maintain proper sanitation procedures and keep the work area clean and neat. Participate in scheduling, food ordering, and planning. Communicate with customers by phone, in person, or e‑mail regarding food and preparation details. Aid in merchandising of sushi foods and layout of food displays. Attend company‑wide and industry meetings as assigned. Adhere to company policies and store guidelines. Report to work on time and when scheduled. Secondary Duties and Responsibilities Plan and perform fresh sushi demonstrations. Stay current on meal trends and menu planning. Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required. Education and Experience High school or equivalent with Hy‑Vee food safety training and Food Safety Certification. One to three years of similar or related work experience. Prior experience in meal preparation preferred. Physical Requirements Exert up to 50 lbs of force frequently and up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects. Perform activities such as balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics Logical or scientific thinking to solve problems with various variables. Arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages. Compose original correspondence and follow technical manuals. Communicate with customers to identify requests and provide guidance. Working Conditions Continual exposure to raw fish, flour, dust, noise, and temperature extremes; occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals/solvents. Fast‑paced environment with significant pressure. Equipment Used to Perform Job Oven, steamer, scale, mixer, shrink wrap machine, Telexon re‑ordering machine, register, walk‑in cooler, knives, serving cases, and C.A.R.S. system. Contacts Daily contact with internal customers and the general public. Weekly contact with suppliers and vendors. Contact with Federal and State government and/or regulatory agencies as necessary.
