DESCRIPTION

Revelle College is the first of the seven undergraduate colleges established at the University of California, San Diego and was named in honor of Roger Revelle, noted for his research on global warming and a major force in the founding of UC San Diego. The colleges are distinguished by their general education curriculum and traditions. Revelle College is known for the breadth, depth and rigor of its general education requirements, which include humanities, mathematics including calculus, language, natural science, social science, and fine arts. Students at Revelle College are actively engaged and involved in a variety of student programs and activities. Revelle College is home to approximately 5000 undergraduate students.

Serve as advising professional for Revelle College students at all levels. Provide online and in-person academic advising on degree requirements, University policies and regulations, and academic opportunities. Help students develop academic plans that align with their personal and professional goals. Determine applicability of transfer coursework to fulfill academic requirements. Provide enrollment advising and transition support for incoming students. Guide undeclared students through the major exploration process. Monitor students' records to ensure academic progress and compliance with requirements and policies. Counsel students experiencing academic difficulty and discuss options and alternatives. Provide referrals to campus resources and services as appropriate. Evaluate records of graduating seniors for completion of requirements. Develop and deliver advising related programs and services to meet the needs of targeted populations. Serve on College and University committees. Act as liaison to academic departments and campus-wide student support offices; interact with faculty, families, and the general public.

  • Must be available for occasional evening and weekend work.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree and at least one to three years of related experience in a higher education setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of academic advising and counseling techniques. Practical application of academic counseling techniques in a college advising environment is required.

  • Knowledge of departmental/school/college courses and majors.

  • Knowledge of department/school/college policies, procedures, and requirements. Ability to analyze, interpret, apply and explain a variety of college, departmental and campus academic policies and procedures.

  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating academic records.

  • Expertise in functioning as a group leader and facilitating group interactions.

  • Demonstrated referral and liaison skills. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Ability to identify and develop appropriate strategies in relation to specific populations and meet the needs of various groups and individuals.

  • Demonstrated skill in using standard office computer technology and campus administrative computing systems, and the willingness and ability to update and maintain those skills as required.

  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving. Skill in helping students with decision-making.

  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original idea to solve problems. Demonstrated skills and abilities in conflict resolution with the ability to exercise sound judgement, cultural sensitivity, and diplomacy.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening. Demonstrated diplomacy in working with diverse population, including students, families, faculty, campus administrators, and the public.

  • Ability to multi-task. Demonstrated skill in organizing work and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines. Ability to manage heavy workload and handle multiple tasks with potentially competing deadlines while maintaining accuracy. Demonstrated ability to take appropriate initiative, work independently, and exercise professional judgment.
